Firefighter strike negotiations to be heard by special panel

An independent panel is expected to make recommendations about the firefighters' strike next week.

16 November 2010

Strike negotiations will be heard by a special panel to try and reach an agreement over new shift patterns that led to industrial action being taken by firefighters recently.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and London Fire Brigade managers will take it in turns to express their respective views to the independent panel, with recommendations expected to be made next week.

Recently, the FBU held two eight-hour strikes in London, but decided to call off a further walkout that was due to take place on Bonfire Night.

"Although the meeting won't result in an immediate agreement, I do expect recommendations to come back to both ourselves and the union within a week or so," said London fire commissioner Ron Dobson.

More than 5,500 firefighters working in the capital took part in strikes at the start of the month, - with the FBU claiming its members will lose their jobs if the new shift-patters are agreed upon.
