Fresh firefighters strike negotiations held

FBU and LFB officials met in Southwark yesterday to resolve shift pattern dispute

03 November 2010

Further striker negotiations have been held between London firefighters and fire brigade officials in a bid to resolve a long running dispute over working hours.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) and the London Fire Brigade (LFB) met in Southwark yesterday (November 2nd) to strike a deal which would prevent London-based crew holding a 48-hour walkout on Bonfire night.

Firefighters are unhappy over proposed changes to their shift patterns which would reduce their working hours during the night but would see daytime working hours increase.

The FBU claims that if its members fail to agree to the new shifts then they will face the sack.

An eight-hour strike was held on Monday following the collapse of 11th hour negotiations over the same issue, forcing the LFB to hire a private firm to provide cover for absent workers.

Three striking firefighters were hit by vehicles while standing in the picket line during Monday's industrial action.
