LU set to hold strike negotiations with unions

LU and union chiefs to meet today to avoid further walkouts

12 October 2010

London Underground (LU) is set to hold strike negotiations with unions in a bid to avoid planned walkouts next month.

The Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union and the Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) have agreed to meet LU officials today (12th October) to resolve a dispute over job cuts.

The unions are unhappy at LU's plan to lay-off 800 ticket office and have already held two 24-hour strikes over the past month, with further walkouts planned in November.

While union chiefs believe passengers safety will be at risk with fewer staff, LU claim staff would be redeployed to ensure no station is left unmanned.

The meeting comes just days after LU announced another round of job cuts, with a further 800 office and management positions set to be vacated or left unfilled.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: "Despite the evidence of a Tube system busting apart at the seams, the management have now upped the ante and increased the job cuts plans.

"We will continue to fight those savage cuts every step of the way."
