Binmen action cancelled after strike negotiations
Strike negotiations lead to cancellation of action.
Two days of strike negotiations have led to previously planned action by binmen being cancelled.
Staff in Birmingham had intended to walk out this morning (January 13th) and tomorrow but this was called off late last night following discussions between union officials and the city council.
The Birmingham Post reports more talks aimed at ending the month-long dispute over pay and shifts will continue with both sides reporting significant progress.
It is expected the binmen, who staged a one-day strike last month, will have to accept pay cuts of up to £4,000 each, which were introduced in November due to equal pay regulations, reports the newspaper.
Gerard Coyne, of the Unite union, said: "We are optimistic we can find a permanent resolution to the dispute."
Strike negotiations recently averted action being taken by ITV staff and earned employees a three per cent pay increase after Bectu, Unite and the National Union of Journalists voted to accept the broadcaster's offer.
