Sales negotiations between Qualcomm and Atheros
Sales negotiations underway between Qualcomm and Atheros.
Sales negotiations may currently be underway as Qualcomm looks to buy Atheros Communications, a leading maker of chips used for wireless communications.
The Financial Times states people familiar with the matter have said a deal between the two firms could be announced within days, although they added details have yet to be finalised and may fall apart.
According to the newspaper, discussions began between the companies in autumn, although Qualcomm has recently been more concerned with the sale of wireless spectrum to AT&T for $1.93 billion (£1.24 billion).
That deal, announced in December, is expected to help boost the group's cash pile, which at the end of last quarter already exceeded $10bn.
Qualcomm, which has a market value of close to $83bn, has recently been aiming to expand beyond its traditional focus on mobile phones and high-end smartphones.
It follows recently completed sales negotiations that saw Tutor Perini Corp acquire Fisk Electric Co, a privately-held electrical construction company.
