Sky to purchase The Cloud?

BSkyB could be set to purchase public Wi-Fi network The Cloud.

26 January 2011

Sales negotiations could lead to a deal between BSkyB and public Wi-Fi network The Cloud.

BSkyB is expected to make an announcement about the proposed purchase tomorrow (January 27th) when it reveals its latest earnings report.

Buying The Cloud would enable the company to compete with BT Openzone in its ability to offer customers Wi-Fi while on the move.

The news comes soon after it was announced by culture secretary Jeremy Hunt that he would be referring the proposed merger between BSkyB and News Corp to the Competition Commission.

He said he was not convinced that the deal would be in the best interests of the public.

A spokeswoman for The Cloud told the Register that the firm did not have any comment to make at the moment.

The growth in popularity of Wi-Fi hotspots is helping to relieve some of the strain from 3G networks, which are being used more and more as users purchase increasingly powerful smartphones.
