NUT to strike 'if union bargaining does not succeed'

NUT to strike 'if union bargaining does not succeed'

20 June 2011

The failure of strike negotiations between the National Union of Teachers (NUT), other trade representatives and the government could result in industrial action.

June 30th has been set aside as the date when the NUT, along with the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, are going to take to the picket line.

If union bargaining cannot find a resolution to the problem, then general secretary of the NUT Christine Blower said her organisation will be left with "no other option" but to protest.

"To take away teachers' pensions rights will see many leave the pension scheme and also the profession. This will be a disaster," she added.

Ms Blower remarked Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the Treasury, made it "crystal clear" that the government has no intention of approaching discussions in a "serious and open manner".

The NUT has advised schools to make deductions for industrial action at a daily rate of one-365th.
