Merger and acquisition consultants needed in US banking system?
The US banking system may still see mergers in the future, it has been claimed.
Merger and acquisition consultants may be used in the banking field in the US after a Federal Reserve official noted the group is open to the possibility of takeovers.
Governor of the body Daniel Tarullo, who was speaking at the Conference on the Regulation of Systemic Risk, noted potential mergers will not automatically be blocked due to financial risk.
"We have been instructed to add any increased systemic risk to the list of adverse effects that could result from the merger," he added.
Capital One and ING - the latter was ranked eighth on the 2009 Global 500 list - are currently in business negotiations as they try to push through a deal that could see a megabank created in the US.
Mr Tarullo observed it is the duty of the Federal Reserve to balance risky behaviour so that it does not damage the economy.
He added capping the size of lending institutions is not necessarily the answer.
