Supporters' Trust hopeful of completing Portsmouth acquisition

The Pompey Supporters' Trust has received the blessing of the Football League in its bid to take over Portsmouth Football Club.

12 December 2012

The Pompey Supporters' Trust has said it believes it is close to completing the successful acquisition of Portsmouth Football Club.

Business negotiations for the ownership of the cash-strapped club have encountered a number of difficulties - including the current owners refusing the Trust's bid for the club's stadium of Fratton Park.

However, the Trust has welcomed the news this week that the Football League will support its bid and this regulatory victory means the body now only needs a successful outcome to the court case over the ground - and for Trust members to make good pledges to buy shares.

Trust chairman Ashley Brown said: "We are very pleased the Football League has shown confidence in our bid by endorsing our proposed membership. This is a highly significant moment for the club."

Portsmouth were a Premier League club until 2010 and won the FA Cup in 2008, but problems with deep debt and issues of ownership have led to the team being in administration and close to extinction more than once.
