Tech blogger claims Microsoft will buy Nokia smartphone business

An influential technology blogger has inspired shares in Nokia to soar after saying Microsoft would buy up its smartphone business.

06 January 2012

Eldar Murtazin, a technology blogger who is very influential, started rumours yesterday (January 5th) when he said Microsoft would buy Nokia's smartphone business - a move that could excite merger and acquisition consultants.

The Russian writer posted a message on Twitter that said: "Steve Balmer, Andy Lees and Stephen Elop, Kai Ostamo will meet in Las Vegas to finalize agreement about Nokia smartphone unit. Bye Nokia."

In an interview with Forbes, the blogger explained that weak interest from Samsung and HTC towards Windows operating systems and poor sales of Nokia's Lumia models were among the factors that led to the talks.

However, this is not the first time Microsoft and Nokia have spoken about a deal, Mr Murtazin added, saying they previously met in May 2011.

According to Google Finance figures, shares in Nokia had fallen 2.8 per cent by 11:31 local time on the New York Stock Exchange today.
