Unite threatens longer Wincanton strike

Unite the union has threatened Wincanton with further industrial action.

27 January 2012

Strike negotiation specialists could be needed by Wincanton, as Unite the union has warned industrial action against the employer could intensify.

The trade organisation reported it has given the company notice that the strike will continue for a further seven days.

If the firm does not begin discussing its terms and conditions around the bargaining table, it could last for fourteen consecutive days, it continued.

Unite national officer Matt Draper said: "The strike is solid," adding that it will restart on Thursday February 2nd and end on February 9th "unless a resolution can be reached".

It is in response to changes to driver's pensions and has seen jet fuel trucks remain idle, hitting three major oil terminals and hampering deliveries to 381 petrol forecourts.

A total of 123 members of staff began the strike at 05:00 GMT on January 24th.

Wincanton's managing director for manufacturing Chris Kingshott  has argued the company does not understand the motivation for the strike, noting: "Unite has engineered this dispute to suit a wider agenda."
