IQE and RFMD sign acquisition agreement
IQE has acquired an MBE epitaxy manufacturing unit from RFMD.
IQE, a leading supplier to the semiconductor industry, has revealed it has signed an agreement to acquire RFMD's entire molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) epi-water manufacturing unit.
Negotiation strategies could have been used to secure the deal, which also involves the purchase of 16 operational MBE tools, as well as a seven-year agreement to supply wafers.
The transaction is forecast to immediately enhance IQE's earnings, with this continuing for future years.
It should put the enterprise in a powerful position in the concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) market, resulting in a CPV wafer revenue capacity of as much as $35 million (£22.6 million).
President and chief executive officer of IQE Dr Drew Nelson stated the purchase should help his firm to "rapidly build a global leadership position in the supply of wafers for the burgeoning CPV sector".
"This is a clear win-win for both organisations," he added.
Recently, IQE and CPV-cell developer Solar Junction Corporation signed an exclusive wafer supply and strategic investment agreement.
